Is intermittent fasting for you?
The Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to Yoshinori Ohsumi, a cell biologist, for his research in autophagy. Autophagy is the body’s way of cleaning out damaged cells to regenerate new ones. It is a detox system of the body and keeps your body working in tip top condition if it is activated. If it is not the ageing process is accelerated, increasing the risk of dementia, cancer and other age related diseases.
Glucagon (a hormone produced in the pancreas, stimulated by low blood sugar levels in the blood stream) increases when we fast, it is the increase in glucagon that stimulates autophagy. Autophagy then removes the dead remnants of the cells before new components can be created.
Eating glucose and proteins increases insulin (hormone produced by the pancreas, stimulated by high blood sugar), and reduces glucagon thus stopping autophagy and the ability to detox the cells.
In standard calorie reduction the metabolism slows down to adjust and energy is stored as fat. With low carbohydrate meals and even better fasting, insulin levels reduce and fat is easily released for energy thus increasing metabolism and autophagy.
Calorie reduction damages our metabolism, fasting can improve and correct it as we access the fat stores in our body for energy.
Fasting involves restricting food intake to a specific time frame typically between 6 to 8 hours in the day, or on the more extreme side, fasting for 24 hours and longer. With a keto diet alongside intermittent fasting fat loss can be increased.
In summary intermittent fasting can:
Promote autophagy – cell detoxification
Reduce risk of age related diseases
Promote stimulation of glycogen and burning of stored fat
Reverse metabolic damage from low fat high carbohydrate diets
Decrease inflammation within the body
As you enter phase two of the Choose It Lose IT programme, you will find that your appetite has diminished significantly. Your Shape IT capsules are designed to be taken 30 minutes before the two largest meals of the day. Many client's successfully find that in this stage they introduce intermittent fasting. We recommend that to begin with you eat and drink within a 12 hour period, say 8 am- 8 pm. From there you reduce this window down to 10 am - 6 pm and finally 12 md to 6 pm. You would therefore take your nutraceuticals in this period and not consume food outside these hours. You can drink black tea, herbal tea and water.
